“Are we significant?”

Humans were made to work towards a purpose. On the shelves of bookstores, scrolling on Amazon.com you’ll find thousands of titles relating to finding your purpose and building your life around that purpose.

We do not need those books. At Maple Lawn Farms, we have purpose built into everything we do. It’s YOU!

  • When we prune trees in the dead of winter, it’s to grow good fruit for you in the summer.
  • When we pull weeds by hand, it’s so you enjoy the fun park more completely.
  • When we hire and train new donut-makers, it’s so we can keep up on donuts throughout the busy Fall weekends.
  • When Frank changes the oil and greases the tractors, it’s so we can safely drive you to the pumpkin patch.
  • When we plant Sunflowers, 15 different times, it’s so they bloom for you to get awesome pictures.
  • When Farmer Matt plants & picks the fields of corn, it’s so we have a productive farm for you to enjoy year after year as you’ve made us part of your family tradition.

Flashlight Nights begin this Saturday and I’ll often walk my driveway in the evening, just thinking, being grateful and looking up. On the farm, the sky is dark enough to see the stars. Down in the corn maze on a Fall evening, you’ll be able to see the stars, too.

Are you significant? Some people look at the stars and feel insignificant. They ponder the meaning of their one life, on this one planet, in an infinite universe. How could anything they do matter at all in the grand scheme of things? They see the galaxies in heaven laid out before them and feel insignificant.

I challenge you to find and own your significance. As I was walking, head tilted back looking up to the stars, I felt the vastness of the universe, but it didn’t make me feel insignificant. Humble, yes, but not insignificant.

Imagine that in the vastness of the infinite universe, you exist at all! And if you exist, it must be for a purpose. You are not a mistake, a random chance, but you are here to do something.

You might be here to teach a child, to care for a parent, to bring people together, to coach, to lead, to follow, to learn, to share to hope, to feed the hungry. The possibilities of what you do with your life are as endless as the night sky!

We’ve found our purpose here on the farm. It’s to host you, feed you, and make sure you enjoy special time together with your family.

Come, maybe even to enjoy flashlight nights this Saturday, and when you do, pause to look up as the sky grow dark and the stars come out to shine. As you look up, feel humble and significant. You matter and you are not a random happenstance, but instead, know that you were created for a good and noble purpose.

Find it.

Have a great week,

Farmer Hugh
