Take it when you can get it.

Hey,

Take it when you can get it.. In parenting, as in life, I find that you have to take it when you can get it.

I don’t know about you, but my kids are in every activity: Soccer, symphony, marching band, chorus, youth group, working on the farm, vocal ensembles, private instrument lessons, NJHS, student council, and on and on and on.

As a parent, when I can get a night to watch a TV show with my son, I take it. When I can take my teenage daughter out to each, I take it. When my wife and I get to go out to dinner without kids, I take it.

At Maize Quest, we had a rained out Sunday and I had a chance to take a nap in the afternoon – I took it. When we have a chance to welcome a preschool group personally, I take it. When there’s a beautiful morning and I can share the farm view with you on Facebook LIVE, I take it.

You have to take it when you can get it.

So often we live with regret; all the things we wish we did, wish we had time for. In actuality, we all get the same amount of time, the same chance to make our lives what we want them to be.

Fear, doubt and self-consciousness. These three emotions are the biggest restraints. We fear what people will think, we fear the unknown, we fear failing, we fear letting others down, we doubt our abilities, we get so self-conscious that we cripple our ability to live life fully.

Watch the video above. I wasn’t always the genuine Farmer Hugh you see in that video. I used to think that I had to edit everything until it was perfect before posting and sharing it with the world.

Once I started to relax, it got easier and easier to just let you all into the real world of a farmer. Things don’t always go as planned. It doesn’t rain when we want it to, and sometimes, like this year, it doesn’t stop!

I’m exactly the same in person and on video. I just let it all out, because, who needs another highly-polished ‘talking head’ reading scripted material from a teleprompter?!

Aren’t we all looking for something real? For someone real? Who is out there, really working, really trying, and really adding to the world? Well, good news – farmers like us, are real!

This weekend, won’t you join us on our REAL family farm? You could really meet my Dad, Paul! you can REALLY pick and apple form the tree and a pumpkin from the vine that grew it! You can meet our staff who are REALLY nice people – Imagine that?!

The farm is OPEN for Fall Harvest and YOU are REALLY, and personally, invited to visit and enjoy with your family.

This weekend looks sunny, and you are probably ready to get out and enjoy the Fall weather, so, if you get the chance, take it!

We’re sure you’ll have a REALLY good time:-)

See you soon,

Farmer Hugh
