“The most wonderful time of the year” Andy got it wrong.
Hello from the farm!
“The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” was released by Andy Williams for Christmas of 1963. It is one of my favorite Christmas songs, yet I disagree entirely with Andy.
In fact, I don’t think Andy was a farmer.
Right NOW is the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” because it is harvest time. I think if Andy had visited Maple Lawn Farms and walked around, enjoying the loaded apple trees, the pumpkins bursting off the vines, kids squealing with delight as they ride the Mega Slide, and families bustling through the farm market eating fresh, hot donuts…
…well, I think we’d have won Andy over!
- Friends, there is a chill in the air.
- I wore the first hoodie sweatshirt to work this morning.
- Apples are crisp and ripe.
- Pumpkins are bright orange, white, & green.
- If you look closely, the early trees are changing colors.
It reminds me that the seasons are changing, just as these challenging times will be changing. Time moves ever forward.
What’s it like inside you as time moves forward? I dropped my daughter off at college a few weeks ago, and everyone told me how sad I’d be to see her go, but I honestly felt something completely different.
As I hugged her, I looked into her beautiful face. I was so happy that her next chapter, her next adventure, her hard-earned collegiate opportunity for which she worked and invested countless hours practicing and auditioning, was finally beginning.
Inside me, I look toward the future. This time of year is the culmination of a hard-fought growing season, a season that was sequentially too much frost, too much heat, too much drought, then too much rain.
Add in the highs and lows of a pandemic… Will we open? Can we do drive-thru festivals? Will my staff be safe? How do I find hand sanitizer? With no peach crop will we survive August? Will the sunflowers bloom on time? Will anyone want to come to the maze?
Through all of that, we discovered that YES, this farm and all those who depend on it for their livelihoods and all those who depend on us for fresh fruit and fun would make it. We made it to harvest.
When I think about the tremendous responsibility to get it all done and when I consider how many people, thousands of people, enjoy the fruitful hard work this one farm, this one team, put into making it all happen, well, by golly,
This is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
See you soon on the farm,
Farmer Hugh
