Close your feed and write.

I do not like being told what to do. Yes, I just gave you a robust declarative statement, but it was for your good: Close your feed and write. We are no longer conditioned to write, yet our consumption of words, posts, videos, pictures is higher than ever. Your mind has become one-way as you push the vast majority of the traffic into your head and offer little back out, aside from a double-tap 'heart' or laughing emoji.  Overwhelm and anxiety stem from this one-way flow. Your mind is struggling to keep all this information in with no safety valve…

Maybe you just need a change in perspective.

Hey, I'm in a busy season of life, and maybe you are, too. Between business, family, teenagers, community activities and everything else we have to juggle in our lives, it seems like life and decision-making keep getting closer. Almost like I'm living life right in front of my face. If you've raised teenagers, you know what I mean. You'll hear things such as, "This test is life or death", or "If I don't get my drivers license, everything's over", or "I can't stand this [INSERT person/place/thing/idea] for one more minute". That's living life "right in front of your face". As we age, the notion of wisdom might…

“Messages in the Maze”

Ever wonder how to reach kids today? How about teenagers?! Maybe you need some Messages from the Maze... Hey Friends, As my kids have grown and progressed through various stages and ages, we’ve noticed that our family gets more out of life when we live in the present; in this very moment. My kids are 17 & 15 now, so my wife and I have been through preschool age activities, PTO functions, and Vacation Bible School. Now we’re into youth symphony, marching band, cross country, swimming, and so many more. The trick is living each year, each phase "in the moment". Each group…

You need to keep hiring. This time of year gets hectic, though it should never come as a surprise. We are in the middle of wine events, farm market, pick-your-own orchards, the corn maze is open every weekend, tours are starting... you know how it is, hectic. Being short-staffed is…

Maple Lawn Farms & Fun Park Closing, a new direction for 2019.

A new direction for this family farm. Hey Gang, This doesn't happen often, but every generation is different, so we're taking a new direction at Maple Lawn Farms. Kids will be kids, and my kids, the 6th generation at Maple Lawn Farms have spoken - it's time for a different phase. Our kids just aren't into the whole, "Crazy Farmer Hugh & Mazes" stuff, so they have opted for a new path: Beef Cattle. We'll be tearing out the slide, the labyrinth, though the bamboo will stay in place. The pedal kart track is leaving as well, and the corn box will remain, but as a…

You’re totally fighting for less time, totally.

This is Part 1 in a 4 part series I've been working on since the NAFDMA convention (that's North American Farmers Direct Marketing Assoc. or FarmersInspired.com) in an effort to encapsulate and explore all the ideas I uncovered and make them useful. This blog series is meant to be responsive and interactive, so please, when I ask seemingly rhetorical questions or really hard questions at the end of each, take up the challenge and answer back by email! I want you to be disturbed by these questions, to shock your brain into a creative mode. Hope you enjoy! You're totally fighting for less time,…

2019 NAFDMA’s current lack of judgement.

Really? Again? Shouldn't you know better by now than to do THAT? Hey Gang, I don't know what's happening, but the current board and staff of NAFDMA are showing a real lack of good judgment. I came to NAFDMA for the first time in 1999's convention when I was 24 years old. I had been asked to speak about Public Relations, which I thought I could do well. Upon arrival, I found out I was speaking after Jane Eckert, media professional, consultant and, then, actively involved with one of the largest farm market operations in the industry. I was terrified. My presentation went OK,…

Take it when you can get it.

Hey, Take it when you can get it.. In parenting, as in life, I find that you have to take it when you can get it. I don’t know about you, but my kids are in every activity: Soccer, symphony, marching band, chorus, youth group, working on the farm, vocal ensembles, private instrument lessons, NJHS, student council, and on and on and on. As a parent, when I can get a night to watch a TV show with my son, I take it. When I can take my teenage daughter out to each, I take it. When my wife and I get to go…
